En nu het eigenlijke werk! Mandenvlechten


Velen kennen het werk dat ik jaren geleden al maakte, het traditionele vlechtwerk met bruine, witte of bufwilg. Best wel leuk dat boerenwerk. En, zoals sommige van jullie weten vlecht ik ook in België, waar ook voornamelijk traditionele (nl. de Franse)  technieken worden gebruikt.
Maar omdat ik meer wil ben ik gaan kijken op internet of er iets leuks te vinden is.
Nou dat heb ik geweten!
Van site naar site en van land naar land ben ik 'gevlogen'.
Al die prachtig gevlochten manden en strukturen, iedere streek zijn eigen vormen, kleuren en materialen. Er ging een wereld voor mij open, maar...zou ik dat ook ooit kunnen?
Gezien het zeer traditionele vlechten in Nederland en België zou ik het dus verder buiten onze grenzen moeten zoeken.
Mijn eerste kans kreeg ik in 2008 toen de Engelse Mary Butcher in Nederland les kwam geven in Experimenteel vlechten. Mary staat in de hele vlechtwereld bekend als een zeer goede vlechtster.
Ze is voorzitter van de Basketmakers Association in Engeland en curator van vele exposities op vlechtgebied. Op deze site staan wat voorbeelden van haar werk:

Zij leerde mij heel anders tegen vlechtwerk aankijken en ondertussen heb ik in 2010 een 2e week van haar lessen mogen genieten.

Hetzelfde jaar zijn we op vakantie gegaan naar Frankrijk en daar hebben we het mandenvlechtersfestival in Vallabregues, vlakbij Avignon,  bezocht.  Vlechters uit heel Europa laten daar hun werk zien. Zo ook Eva Seidenfaden en haar groep vlechtsters uit Denemarken.
Via internet hadden we al contact dus het was leuk om nu eens persoonlijk contact te hebben en hun werk te zien..Eva gaf na het festival cursus in het Lambesc in de buurt van Aix-en-Provence en ik kon daar nog aansluiten.
Er werd lesgegeven in de Perigord en Burkina technieken.
In 2009 heb ik in Lichtenfels, Duitsland ook de cursus Baskets4life bij haar gevolgd.

De laatst jaren heb ik mij dus verdiept in allerlei mooie technieken.
Daarover later meer zodat ik jullie in de wereld van het creatieve vlechten kan introduceren.
De voorbereidingen van cursussen in al die speciale technieken, als ook de traditionele technieken, zijn in volle gang.

And now the real work!  Basketmaking

Many know the work I did years ago, the traditional basketmaking with brown, white or buf willow. Pretty nice that traditional work. And, as some of you know, I was basketmaking in Belgium too, where I used mainly traditional ( French) techniques.
But because I wanted more I looked on the Internet for something else to make.
Now, that I have known!
From site to site and from country to country, I "flew".
All those beautiful woven baskets and structures, each region its own forms, colors and materials. There was a world opened to me, but ... could I ever make them too?
Given the very traditional basketmaking in the Netherlands and Belgium, I would therefore have to look beyond the borderlines. My first chance I got in 2008 when the English Mary Butcher came to teach  Experimental weaving in the Netherlands.
Mary is known in the whole basketmakingworld as an excellent basketmaker.
She is president of the Basket Makers Association in England and curator of many exhibitions. On this site are some examples of her work:

She teached me to look on a different way to weavingwork and in 2010 I could enjoy a second week of her teaching.

The same year we went on a vacation to France and there we visited the Basketmakersfestival of Vallabrègues, near Avignon. Weavers from all over Europe show their work here.
So did Eva Seidenfaden and her group from Denmark.
Through e-mail we had already contact so it was nice to have personal contact and see their work.
After the festival Eva gave a course in Lambesc near Aix-en-Provence and I could join them.

Goede voornemens.


Dat waren dus mijn goede voornemens om toch regelmatig wat op mijn blog te zetten.
Ondertussen is de hele zomer al weer voorbij en begint de herfst zich al weer te tonen.
Het is een ontzettend drukke tijd geweest. We hebben hard aan het nieuwe atelier gewerkt maar het ging natuurlijk niet zoals we het ingepland hadden. Tot mijn laatste bericht ging het inderdaad snel maar daarna ging het fout. Problemen met de kozijnenleverantier en geen kozijnen is geen afwerking van muren en vloeren. dus ook geen eletriciteit want dat moet in de vloeren en muren verwerkt worden,
Dus hoe ver zijn we nu? Zaterdag zijn de kozijnen er in gekomen dus we kunnen verder.

Het gaat er nu wel om spannen. Op 10 oktober starten de eerste lessen weer maar we zitten dan in ieder geval warm en droog. Gelukkig heb ik geen opening of opendag ingepland, dat geeft alleen maar heel veel druk en dat doen we dus als we klaar zijn.

Good intensions
So there are going my good intentions to work regularly on my blog.
Meanwhile, the summer has passed and autumn begins to show itself again.
It's been a very busy time. We have worked hard on the new studio but it was obviously it would not go we had planned. Until my last post it was indeed going fast but then it went wrong.
Problems with the dealer off the windowframes and no frames is no finishing off the interior walls and floors. And no electricity and water because then need to be inside the walls and floor.
So how far are we now? Last saturday, the frames came in, so we can continue.

It is now a close race. On October 10th the first classes start again, it will not be ready but at least we are warm and dry in it. Fortunately, I have no openingday or open house scheduled, which only gives us a lot of pressure. So we organize that when we are ready.

Een kleine storing! A small disturbance!

Je kunt wel merken dat ik nog niet helemaal goed met mijn blog om kan gaan.
Vorige week dacht ik: even iets veranderen in mijn tekst, en floep, weg was alles. Het heeft wel even geduurd voor ik alles weer terug gevonden had!

You may notice that I cannot handle my blog as well as I wish.
Last week I thought, I will change something in my text, and pop, everything was gone. It took a while for I found everything back!

22 Mei ben ik naar de Bilt geweest. Op de Rudolf Steiner School zitten 10 cursisten op mij te wachten.
Het is heerlijk weer en er wordt besloten om buiten te gaan vlechten.
We sjouwen tafels en stoelen naar een plekje onder de bomen.
Ze maken allemaal dezelfde mand maar toch worden ze allemaal verschillend.
Bij de een wordt hij wat hoger en bij de ander wat wijder. Maar het resultaat mag er zijn na een dag hard werken.

May 22 I went to the Bilt. At the Rudolf Steiner School 10 students are waiting for me.
It's lovely weather and we decide to work outside.
We carry tables and chairs to a spot under the trees.
They all make the same basket but they are all different.
Some are little higher and the some are a bit wider. But the result is great after a hard day's work.

A new studio

For several years now I teach basketmaking. It started with "creative with willow".
You know, you have an iron frame and you work around it with the willow.
 It is fun to do but my heart is going out to basketmaking.
When I got more and more requests for a  "real" basketmaking course, it was started.  I have at my home only about 16 sqm available to work on, so that is far to small for 6-8 people basketmakin.I contacted the communityhouse, a little further in my street. On Mondays there was a room free where I could start with my first 5 students.
Now, after three winters weaving at the communityhouse, we started to build larger studio at my home.
This last winter, we worked at my house in the livingroom on Tuesdays because the communityhouse didn't have an extra  room free for me. While I didn't want to have the groups to be too large, it was necessary to insert a second evening.
The permit for a new barn in came in October. Where the new barn had to come was still an old concrete slabbarn with an asbestos roof. It was for materials, bicycles, garden tools etc. This had to be demolished. We build an emergencybarn at the terrace for the materials.
And then the winter started! And it was finished with the building, all that snow.
At the end of February we started again, first with the diggings for the foundation, together with some friends.
 With a mini-digger wheelbarrows were filled and a little further back in the garden on a large lot shaken. 2 Weeks later, the yellow sand arrived and we had to fill up the hole with it. Due to various circumstances we started in late April again. April 26 we brought in the concrete for the foundation and subfloor. April 29, the steel trusses where put up. April 30 began the bricklayer started to  build the walls. The studio will be L-shaped, the long leg will be completely studio with a toilet and small kitchen. The short leg will have a sliding wall to separate from the rest for housing in the bikes there again. The two long walls are from brick and the rest is woodbuilding. Saterday May 22, the first beams for the frames are put in. Now you can see how the building actually is. I hope to give at the end of September the first lessons in my new studio. No moving aroud with tools or materials to the communityhouse anymore or forgetting things so they have to bring them. Everything  will be at hand.

Een nieuw atelier

Sinds enkele jaren geef ik les in vlechten. Het begon met "creatief met wilgentenen".
Je kent het wel, een ijzeren frame en daar wordt met de wilg omheen gewerkt.
Eeg leuk om te doen maar mijn hart gaat toch uit naar het mandenvlechten.
Toen ik steeds meer aanvragen kreeg voor  een cursus "echt" mandenvlechten was het natuurlijk zo bekeken. Daar ik thuis maar zo'n 16 m² ter beschikking heb, wat veel te weinig is om met 6-8 mensen te vlechten, werd er contact opgenomen met Gemeenschapshuis het Patronaat, een stukje verder bij mij in de straat. Op maandagavond was er nog een zaaltje vrij zodat ik daar met de eerste 5 cursisten kon beginnen.
Nu, na 3 winters daar gevlochten te hebben, zijn we een groter atelier aan het bouwen.
De laatste winter is er op dinsdagavond ook nog bij mij thuis gevlochten, uit nood, omdat het Patronaat geen zaaltje voor mij vrij had. Om de groepen niet te groot te laten worden was het nodig om een 2e avond in te lassen.
De vergunning voor een nieuwe schuur was in oktober rond. Waar de nieuwe schuur moest komen stond nog een oude betonplaten schuur met een asbestgolfplatendak. Daarin stond vlechtmateriaal, de fietsen, tuingereedschap enz. Die moest eerst worden afgebroken. Voor de materialen werden een noodschuurtje getimmerd op het terras.
En toen viel de winter in! Afgelopen was het met het bouwen.
Eind februari zijn we toen weer begonnen, eerst met het uitgraven van de fundering, samen met een aantal vrienden.

Met een mini-graver werden de kruiwagens gevuld en een stukje verder in de tuin weer op een grote hoop leeg geschud. 2 Weken later werd het gele zand gebracht en dat moest er ook weer allemaal ingereden worden. Door allerlei omstandigheden werd er pas eind april weer vaart gemaakt.

26 april ging het beton voor de fundering en de ondervloer er in. 29 April werden de stalen spanten overeind gezet. De 30e april begon de metselaar de muren op te trekken.

Het atelier wordt L-vormig, de lange poot wordt helemaal atelier met 1 toilet en kleine keuken.

De poot wordt door een verschuifbare wand van de rest gescheiden zodat de fietsen er ook weer in kunnen. De 2 lange muren worden gemetseld en de rest wordt houtskeletbouw.

Zaterdag 22 mei zijn de eerste balken voor de frames gezet.

Nu kun je zien hoe de bouw werkelijk wordt. Ik hoop eind september de eerste lessen in mijn nieuwe optrekje te kunnen geven. Geen gesjouw met materiaal en gereedschap meer naar het Patronaat of vergeten dingen weer moeten laten nabrengen. Alles lekker bij de hand.

Why set up a blog?
It's a great way for my family, friends and students to keep informed of the things I do.
It allows me to tell you about all my experiences in the basket making, weaving, meetings, teaching and all other interesting things I do.
And it gives everyone who comes to my classes or who sees my work or is interested in it  the ability to respond ........ if you want. .

Waarom een weblog opgezet?
Het is een fantastische manier om mijn familie, vrienden en cursisten op de hoogte te houden van de dingen die ik doe, .
Het geeft mij de mogelijkheid om al mijn ervaringen op het gebied van het mandenmaken,het vlechten, de ontmoetingen, het lesgeven en alle andere interessante dingen aan jullie  te vertellen.
En het geeft iedereen die naar mijn workshops komt of die mijn werk ziet of er in geinteresseerd is de mogelijkheid om te reageren........als je wil. .
